Little Step No. 73

Step No.73

What to do:

Add mustard seeds to your cabbage.

Why this step works:

I love cabbage, not just because I grew up in the Cabbage Patch Kids era (!) But because it’s packed with goodness, it's super versatile and it delivers great value for money.  This little step is a very simple way to get even more goodness out of the humble cabbage by adding mustard seeds when you cook it

Cabbage belongs to the cruciferous family; other members include broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and kale and there’s something quite remarkable that unites them all.

They contain a SPECIAL compound called glucoraphanin which has the potential to be converted into a VERY SPECIAL compound called sulforaphane. Sounds complicated but the takeaway here is simple. You really want this conversion to happen because sulforaphane can do wonders for your health. There are a few ways you can help this conversion along and yes, you've guessed it, adding mustard seeds to cabbage (or any cruciferous veg) is one of them.

What’s so special about sulforaphane? Imagine if you could flick a switch in your body that turns on powerful protective antioxidant and detoxification systems? Well that’s pretty much what sulforaphane does. And this translates into countless potential benefits for just about every aspect of your health.

So how do you add mustard seeds to cabbage? Here’s a very easy recipe from BBC Good Food to get you started. Hope you enjoy the hidden powers of this superhero dish x
