Little Step No. 67

Step No.67

What to do:

Add capers to (anything!)

Why this step works:

For my first little step of 2023 I wanted to share something very simple.

I love the hope and optimism of a new year and find this can be a powerful motivator for change. I’m mindful however that lofty ‘I am going to change everything all at once’ goals often burn very brightly to begin with, fade quickly and are not usually much good to anyone in the long run. If you're making goals this year, I'd suggest starting with ones that are so utterly simple, realistic and achievable that you absolutely cannot fail.

And if you’re looking for dietary changes, why not start with this teeniest, tiniest of little steps...

Add capers to (anything!)

Capers are the little green flower buds of the caper bush; you’ll find them in farm shops and supermarkets, pickled in brine in little jars. I think they deserve their moment in the spotlight because they are ridiculously easy to add to your food, add delicious flavour to many dishes and deliver health benefits that most people aren't aware of.

So what’s so great about capers?

Over the last few years, I’ve written and talked a lot about immune support. And one plant compound that’s had more airtime than most is an incredible flavonoid called QUERCETIN. You’ll find quercetin in onions, apples, garlic, ginger and yes, you’ve guessed it, CAPERS! There’s so much I could say about quercetin, but perhaps its most impressive quality is that it seems to be able to both regulate & support the immune system. More specifically, quercetin has been shown to have antiviral, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-proliferative and anti-allergic properties.

How can I add capers into my diet?

The easiest way I've found is to sprinkle a teaspoon of them over a salad, straight from the jar. If you prefer them less salty and vinegary, simply give them a quick rinse in a colander first. Capers also work particularly well with lemon, eggs, fish or added to tomato-based sauces.

And there you have it, our first little step of 2023.

A teeny, tiny caper.

A teeny, tiny little step.

Vast potential.

Wishing you all the very, very best for this new year.  Here’s to us starting small with the tiniest of little steps and watching them grow together x
